DANCE CLASSES

Dance is a performing art form consisting of sequences of movement, either improvised or purposefully selected. This movement has aesthetic and often symbolic value. Dance can be categorised and described by its choreography, by its repertoire of movements, or by its historical period or place of origin. Dance is performed with the accompaniment of music and usually in time with the beat and feel of the music from the specified genre. The Macau Glee Club is very passionate about dance and offers classes in many different dance forms and for many different ages. We have some of the finest teachers from Macau and around the world who are ready and waiting to welcome you to your next class. Please see below some more details in regards to the selection of training sessions we offer here at the Macau Glee Club.

JAZZ DANCE

Jazz Dance is a performance dance technique and style that first emerged in the United States in the early twentieth century. Jazz dance refers to vernacular Jazz or to Broadway or theatrical Jazz, both genres build on African-American vernacular styles of dancing that emerged with Jazz music. The term 'Jazz Dance' has been used in ways that have little or nothing to do with Jazz Music. Since the 1940s, Hollywood movies and Broadway shows have used the term to describe the choreographies of Bob Fosse and Jerome Robbins. In the 1990s, colleges and universities applied the term to classes offered in which students dance to various forms of Pop Music. Today, Jazz Dance is influenced by Pop Music and can be seen in concerts and video clips for artists such as Jennifer Lopez, Lady Gaga, Beyoncé and Dua Lipa. Famous movies that feature Jazz Dance are Happy Feet, Beauty and the Beast, Billy Elliot, Step Up and West Side Story, just to name a few. Jazz dance enhances flexibility, movement and fitness. Emma will be teaching the Jazz Dance, Foundation Jazz, Dance Fit and Jazz Funk sessions this term and the following subjects will be covered in these sessions:

HIP HOP DANCE

Hip-hop dance refers to street dance styles primarily performed to hip-hop music or that have evolved as part of hip-hop culture. It includes a wide range of styles primarily breaking which was created in the 1970s and made popular by dance crews in the United States. The television show Soul Train and the 1980s films Breakin', Beat Street, and Wild Style showcased these crews and dance styles in their early stages; therefore, giving hip-hop mainstream exposure. The dance industry responded with a commercial, studio-based version of hip-hop—sometimes called "new style"—and a hip-hop influenced style of jazz dance called "jazz-funk". Classically trained dancers developed these studio styles in order to create choreography from the hip-hop dances that were performed on the street. Because of this development, hip-hop dance is practiced in both dance studios and outdoor spaces.

HEELS DANCE

Heels dance is a dance form that emerged and evolved in the US and Europe in the late 20th and early 21st centuries. It is named after the women's shoe style, since one of its distinguishing features is the wearing of High-Heeled Shoes during performance.

Heels dance is often featured in routines seen in pop and hip-hop music videos. Its techniques and dance vocabulary derive from a wide range of dance styles used in music video choreography as well as traditional dance genres. It is characterised by dynamic footwork & technique from jazz danceshowgirl dance, ballroom dance and Latin dance. Many other dance styles have influenced this modern day dance style: for example, torso isolations borrowed from belly dance and hip hop dance, floor work, fluid arm work and body language in some forms of heels dance coming from exotic dancing and contemporary dance. Heels dance is technically demanding, and dancers who perform it are typically professionally trained in jazz dance & other styles, including ballet.
